2013 BMW HP4 First Look

BMW has unveiled the latest of its HP models and the first HP based on a four-cylinder, the HP4. Like the HP2 Sport and Megamoto models, the HP4 is based on an existing BMW, the S 1000 RR. Chief among the upgrades is the first application of Dynamic Damping Control, the company's semi-active suspension system that varies front and rear suspension damping based on the riding mode selected, lean angle and road speed. Other changes from the standard S 1000 RR include a wider, 200/55 rear tire, forged aluminum wheels, a lighter batter and a titanium exhaust system. Together, the lighter components see the HP4 more than five pounds lighter than the S 1000 RR.
The HP4's electronics package has also been upgraded. The Race ABS system has been updated with an "IDM setting," which incorporates racing experience from the International German Motorcycle Championship into the ABS Slick mode's settings. The new setting "offers refined control impulses and allows maximum deceleration at the grip limit of the tires." The shift assistant is standard equipment, launch control has been added, and the Dynamic Traction Control parameters can now be adjusted in Slick mode to match changing conditions or rider preference. in Slick mode, an additional adjustment range of -7 to +7 is provided, which can be selected using the shift paddle provided on the left handlebar. The four engine modes (Rain, Sport, Race and Slick) all provide maximum power and identical throttle curves. While peak power is unchanged, torque has been increased in the 6000 to 9750 rpm range.

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa continues to set the MotoGP pace at Laguna Seca, continuing his form from the first free practice into the second and heading Jorge Lorenzo by three-tenths of a second, edging closer to Casey Stoner's circuit best set in 2008. But both Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow crashed in the session, with the former's necessiting a red-flag as his GP12 popped some of the air fencing when it came to an abrupt halt. The Doctor hit a dusty patch of tarmac on the entry to turn three while Monster Yamaha's Crutchlow took some skin off his backside when he crashed at the 90mph turn ten. Pedrosa's fastest lap was a 1'21.088, which is inside the race lap record but just behind the 1'20.700 owned by Stoner. Lorenzo was on a 1'21.422 which was just enough to keep Aussie Stoner behind him by three one-thousandths.
Stoner is using just the new RC213V engine while his team-mate has also brought the tested-at-Mugello chassis and it is giving him an edge through the final sector from the Corkscrew to the finish line, where he is markedly faster than the pack. Soon-to-be-a-not factory Yamaha man Ben Spies was fourth quickest and six-tenths off the pace, heading both Andrea Dovizoso and Crutchlow on the Tech3 bikes. Despite his off, the British rider just over 1.1s slower than Pedrosa and two-tenths up on his team-mate elect for next year, Nicky Hayden. Stefan Bradl, making his debut at the track, pipped Rossi to eighth place while Alvaro Bautista, also a crasher at turn three, rounds out the top ten. Aleix Espargaro is the top CRT man in 11th and heads his Aspar team-mate Randy De Puniet, both are 2.7s off the pace. olin Edwards is 13th but didn't top his time from session one until late on while James Ellison slipped to 19th place. American Steve Rapp will more than likely get it in the neck from Stoner as the reigning champion was forced off track when he came up behind the American into turn four very fast and took to the kitty litter.

Suzuki GSX-R

symbolizes the beginning of the modern sportbike. Based on Suzuki's works endurance racer, the no-nonsense, purpose-built GSX-R was the first production race-replica from a Japanese OEM. The Suzuki GSX-R's combination of light weight (387 lbs. dry) and power (100 hp at 10,500 rpm) was a performance package unmatched by other sportbikes, while its aluminum frame, clip-on handlebars, rear-set footpegs and full-fairing with twin headlights completed the GSX-R's distinctive, made-for-racing architecture. Unlike its 400cc counterpart and other contemporary sportbikes of the era, the Suzuki GSX-R750 was powered by an air- and oil-cooled engine, the same engine format powering the 750's big brother, the Suzuki GSX-R1100, also launched in 1986. Cast from essentially the same mold, the Suzuki GSX-R1100 upped the 750's horsepower (125 hp) and top speed (155 mph) figures. Both models became the bike of choice for privateer motorcycle road racers competing in respective displacement classes.

Kawasaki has developed a new electronic steering damper for the 2013 ZX-10R sportbike, in joint cooperation with Öhlins. Controlled by a dedicated ECU located under the gas tank cover, this new damper reacts to the rate of acceleration or deceleration, as well as rear wheel speed, to help provide the ideal level of damping force across a wide range of riding scenarios. The variable damping provides optimum rider feedback by enabling the use of lower damping forces during normal operation, without sacrificing the firm damping needed for high-speed stability. The result is a light and nimble steering feel at low speed, as well as superior damping at higher speeds or during extreme acceleration/deceleration. The anodized damper unit incorporates Öhlins’ patented twin-tube design to help ensure stable damping performance and superior kickback absorption. It is mounted horizontally at the front of the fuel tank and requires very few additional components and ads almost no weight compared to last year’s steering damper. The highly advanced and customizable Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control (S-KTRC) lets riders harness and capitalize on the ZX-10R’s amazing blend of power and responsive handling. Exclusive to the ZX-10R, S-KTRC offers a level of performance that raises the ZX above the rest of the open sport bike class.

BMW S1000RR Price: $15,050 USD

The S 1000 RR’s first year in production revolutionised the super-sport market, out performing the more conventional competition which has dominated the market for the past decade. This makes it even more exciting to be able to say that the adrenaline filled 193bhp of sheer excitement, is now more affordable than ever before.
The latest in racing power. With an aluminium bridge, radial brakes, the BMW S1000RR comes standard in Canada with Race ABS, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Gear Shift Assist. Never before is it so easy to keep so much power under control. This is just as true on public roads as it is down on the racetrack. The RR label shows that it is a full-blooded racing bike, even though it can also be ridden with a number plate attached. To top it all off is an engine which is our absolute pride and joy. And our motorsports team agree wholeheartedly.  Just as before, the S 1000 RR sports the water cooled four cylinder inline engine of solely 59.8 kg delivering a top power output of 142 kW (193 hp) at 13,000 rpm and a top engine speed of 14,200 rpm. The max torque of 112 Nm is reached at 9750 rpm. Reconfigured throttle for improved overall response.

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R

The 2012 ZX-6R carries on the tradition of middleweight dominance – started back in 1985 with the revolutionary ZX600-A1 – to a staggering level. And in today’s ultra-competitive 600 supersport market, where technology, racetrack success and streetbike acumen can change dramatically year by year, that’s saying a lot. Don’t believe us? Then ask the many top-level magazines and web sites that picked the current-spec ZX-6R as Best Middleweight. It was an absolutely dominating 600 shootout performance – and one sure to be replicated in 2012 due to the ZX-6R’s track-honed DNA and seamless all-around capability. It all starts with the ZX-6R’s jewel-like engine, a 599cc assemblage of everything Kawasaki knows about powerplant building, and the result of untold hours of testing and refinement garnered from dyno room to racetrack and back again. Squeezing big power from small displacement has been a Kawasaki forte for many years, from the 350cc A7 Avenger to the 500cc H1, and from that first Ninja 600 to this latest ZX-6R, class-leading power is a Kawasaki sportbike birthright. Power. Speed. Handling. Dominance. The Ninja® ZX™-6R packs all this and more underneath its 599cc engine, twin spar aluminum frame and advanced Showa suspension. Whether you're a street rider or a racer, this bike packs the kind of potent strength that will satisfy even the most discriminating enthusiasts.
